Mexico Deploys 11 Thousand Cops to Make Sure Fireworks Don’t Crash the World Cup Party

The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana is rolling out 11,219 officers and 923 vehicles this Wednesday for the Colombia versus Uzbekistan match at Estadio Ciudad de México, part of the 2026 World Cup festivities. The plan blankets the stadium, the Zócalo Fan Festival and neighborhood soccer festivals across all 16 boroughs with a level of coordination that would impress even the most demanding logistics manager.

Most of the muscle concentrates around the stadium itself, where 7,800 uniformed personnel and 627 vehicles will handle perimeter checks, access control and the Operativo Cometa, a specialized sweep designed to keep pyrotechnics and flares from sneaking inside. Fans carrying such items will be politely asked to surrender them at the gate or stay outside, turning potential troublemakers into reluctant donors of confiscated party favors. The Última Milla mobility zone will keep traffic flowing for residents while special staff assists people with limited mobility and tourists who suddenly discover they need directions in three languages at once.

At the Zócalo, another 3,400 officers will run bag checks and drone-style monitoring, while smaller teams cover the borough festivals with sobriety checkpoints and medical support. A separate deployment of 4,286 police is already scheduled for Thursday’s Mexico versus Korea game around the Ángel de la Independencia. Prohibited items range from backpacks and glass bottles to paint cans and smoke bombs, ensuring the only explosions fans experience come from goals rather than homemade devices.

In the end, the operation shows Mexican authorities treating the World Cup like an enormous family reunion where nobody is allowed to bring the bad fireworks that always ruin the cake.
